Providence High School, Enugu (P.H.S.E.) started on 22nd September, 1997(1997/1998 Academic Session) with forty-five(45) students and twenty-six(26) teachers. The population of students increased to seventy-five (75) by the end of the session. It was founded by Chief Engr. N. C. Onwuagha and Chief (Mrs.) E. U. Onwuagha. On 11th November, 1997, the school was dedicated by Their Lordships, Most Rev. Dr. A. O. Gbuji and Most Rev. Dr. M. U. Eneje.
Since the inception of Providence High School, everything about the school has been guided by PROVIDENCE: the choice of the name of the school; the go-ahead approval by both the State and Federal Ministries of Education; the unexpectedly high number of students who registered with us on the first day, 22nd September, 1997; the solemn dedication ceremony of 11th November, 1997; the financial, moral and material support we received from friends and relations; the growth and development of the school to its present level etc. Emphasis on hard work, academic excellence, discipline, good conduct, comportment, and moral and spiritual education remains our hallmark.
The proper spiritual formation of our students has helped to buttress discipline among the student body and for this, we owe gratitude to our Catholic and Anglican chaplaincies viz: the Capuchin Priests and the Good Shepherd Clergymen respectively. At inception, the school premises had one 3-storey building and one bungalow acquired by Ferdinand Property Investment Limited from the Federal Government of Nigeria. Both buildings were completed and put into use by Engr. and Chief (Mrs.) Onwuagha between May and September 1997.
